Executive Functioning Coaching
What is executive function (EF)? Executive function is a set of mental skills that include working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. We use these skills every day to learn, work, and manage daily life. Efficient executive functioning is critical to all behavior successful completion of tasks. Trouble with EF can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions, among other things. Strong working memory, self-control, or self-regulation, and the ability to maintain and shift attention are the foundation upon which academic and social success is built. Seeking help for weaknesses in EF allows trained professionals to help you with mental processes used to plan and organize, sustain attention, complete tasks, manage your emotions, problem-solve, control impulses and monitor your thoughts.
Executive functioning skills CAN be improved and Executive Function Coaching (EFC) is one way to enhance these skills in kids and adults. Your first session consists of taking inventory of your existing skills to determine areas of strengths and needs. Those needs are then targeted in subsequent sessions weekly. There will be a check-in, information on what the skills are and mean, teaching the skill, and reflection on how it impacts your life. The goal of these sessions would be to eventually have individuals establish their executive functions to a degree that they are leading the discussion on how to have a successful week and generalizing the skills to their day to day life.
